The National Railroad Museum is dedicated to education of our nation through the preservation and interpretation of the railroad whose history is woven through the fabric of the United States.
We strive to provide educational programs to teachers and students of all ages, meeting Wisconsin State Academic standards. We are also a rich classroom resource providing access to archives, documents, photographs, lesson plans, pre and post field trip activities, and more. As the Museum continues to develop programs and exhibits, we will continue to develop resources that will assist teachers within the classroom, and provide access within the Museum and within our website.

Pullman Porters Scavenger HuntThis scavenger hunt is a terrific way to guide students through the exhibit, Pullman Porters: From Service to Civil Rights, during a self-guided tour. It will help ensure that the students will take time to read and observe what is presented. The finished document may, also, be used as the basis for discussion once the students return to class.
Pre-Visit Activity: Understanding SegregationThis pre-visit lesson plan helps students learn the personal impact of segregation on society during the early 20th-Century. The Segregation Activity cards, found on this site, must be downloaded for use during the lesson.
Post-Visit: Photograph WorksheetThis worksheet may be used with any of the authentic resources found on our site. Look for them under "Teacher Resources" and then "Authentic Resources". Each file will contain a photograph that may be used in class.
Post Visit: Photograph Worsheet and Activity InstructionThis lesson plan may be used with the Photograph Worksheet, Pullman Porter Discussion Questions and Authentic Resources on our website. Look for these documents on our site. Authentic documents may be found under "Teacher Resources" and then "Authentic Resources". Each file will contain a photograph that may be used in class.
Post-Visit: Create a Labor UnionLet students brain storm about what it takes to form a labor union. Lesson includes reading, discussion questions, and the opportunity to create a speech expressing what the students learned.
