Explore the history and technology of America’s railroads through a Museum tour program 

• Adults

Your Museum exploration can be either guided or self-paced. Each program will allow you to experinece the Museum’s collection and exhibits in an up-close, personal manner.

Guided Explorations require a minimum of two hours. Your guide will discuss the highlights of the collection including: the General Motors Aerotrain, Gen. Eisenhower's WWII command train, the Union Pacific Big Boy, Pennsylvania Railroad GG-1 electric locomotive, the Pullman porters and the Wisconsin 40&8 boxcar.

For a typical adult tour, your time at the Museum would be:

  • 60-minute Guided Tour
  • (Optional) 30-minute Train Ride (available May – September)
  • (Optional) 30-minute Theater Presentation - Last of the Giants - a look at the Union Pacific Big Boy
  • You may wish to allot additional time for explore exhibits not included in the tour or to visit the Museum Store.

Hobo Lunches – Dine like a real rail rider! The Museum can provide your group with a hobo (box) lunch as part of your visit. Please ask for menu and pricing information when you make your tour reservation.

Pricing & Availability – Adult groups of 10+: $7.50 each (age 12+). Tour escort and bus driver are admitted free. Tours are offered throughout the year and a registered on a first-come-first-served basis. Tours are not offered during Museum special events.

• Youth/School

Museum programs for younger patrons exist on many levels, are highly interactive and can be customized to meet specific learning objectives. Youth/School programs are built in short (5-, 10-, 15-minute) blocks, which contain age-appropriate material. During Youth/School programs discussion is supplemented with hands-on activities and going abaord various locomotives and railcars.

Specialized Education Programs – Beyond the general Youth/School programs listed below, the Museum offers a number of specialized education programs. These can be found by clicking here.

Basic Youth/School Programs – We offer two basic programs:

  • Railroad Activity Time (For grades pre-K to 8, ages 4 - 14) – This guided program is an interactive experience that introduces students to trains and railroad safety. The program includes story telling, hands-on activities to demonstrate what trains do and how they work, and a discussion about railroad safety. Content and program length are based on age and/or size the of the group.
  • Museum Research Assistant (For grades 3 to 8, ages 8 - 14) – A tour with a twist. Students work in pairs to research pieces in the collection based on information provided during a guided exploration of the Museum. Additional post-visit questions encourage students to complete further research.

 

Program Time: Please allow a minimum of two hours for basic Youth/School programs.

Train Ride: From May – September a train ride can be included as part of the program.

Pricing & Availability – Ages 4 – 12: $5.00; Age 12+: $7.50. One chaperon is admitted free for every 10 students. Additional adults are welcome at $7.50 each. Basic Youth/School programs are offered throughout the year and a registered on a first-come-first-served basis. Tours are not offered during Museum special events.
