Nearly ten years ago I began work at the National Railroad Museum, first as the educator and later, as executive director. Since that time I have seen enormous organizational growth through a community and Museum membership that makes it possible. As we celebrate our 60th year, I want to personally thank you for your ongoing support as we Inspire lifelong learning by providing dynamic educational opportunities through the preservation of railroad objects, engaging exhibits, and innovative programs. Today, I am writing to urge you to continue your loyal support with a generous gift to the Museum’s Annual Appeal. The National Railroad Museum’s Annual Appeal raises funds that support our mission through our daily operations, rather than for a specific project. As the only Congressionally-designated national museum of any kind in the upper Midwest, we have a wide educational impact, striving to bring our greater world to life through the railroad-themed exhibits, educational programs and family-friendly events. Our mission-based activities create a sense of community and help educators reach all students including those who may have special needs such as autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities or simply do not thrive in traditional learning environments. Our exhibits immerse all of our visitors in a past that is exciting and complex, helping us inform our present. It is the railroad theme – the trains and the artifacts – that help engage and create context, allowing all of us to discover our world in a way that is fun and interactive.
You have helped to create a strong, vibrant Museum that has experienced an 89% increase in educational programs, a 43% increase in community events, 31% growth in attendance from all 50 states and more than 40 countries, and an 18% increase in our historical collections in the last six years alone. Each year rolling stock is restored (most recently the dynamometer car, and a complete restoration began on the Dothan Dining Car as well as additional restoration of the Silver Spirit); educational programs continue to grow with assistance provided to low-income students; and exhibits continue to be updated and new ones installed on a yearly basis. Yet, the Museum receives no federal, state or local funding. The funds raised within the Annual Appeal allow us to do all of this – and more – while keeping admissions and memberships reasonable and affordable.
As we continue to expand the Museum’s offerings to meet the needs of the community, your gift will not only impact the Museum, but those it serves. We hope that we may continue to count on you and your support as we continue to create strong mission-related results,
while continuing to serve the needs of our community in the following year. Please help us meet our $60,000 for 60 years goal.
